What to Expect from Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. At the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg, our highly-skilled cosmetic surgeons perform both traditional and laser liposuction in a comfortable and safe environment.
While liposuction, or liposculpture, removes fat from the body, its desired result is not weight-loss. Nor is the procedure intended to repair cellulite or loose skin. Targeted fat loss is the purpose of liposuction, making the ideal candidate someone who has already achieved their weight-loss goals but struggles with those last stubborn “problem” areas. The thighs, chin, and waistline (including “love handles”) are among those areas most commonly targeted.
Liposuction, when performed by a trained and licensed cosmetic surgeon, is quick and safe. Normally performed under general anesthesia, the procedure takes about an hour and is scheduled on an outpatient basis.
The process of traditional liposuction consists of making a number of small incisions within the natural folds of skin close to the target area. Next, a solution that aids in fat removal and limits bleeding is introduced. Long hollow tubes known as cannulas are then used to suction the fat from the desired location.
In addition to traditional liposuction, the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg also offers laser liposuction. During laser liposuction, a small laser fiber is used to break the fat down into more easily removable oils. The fiber, which is inserted beneath the skin, can then be used by the surgeon to tighten skin from underneath, thanks to the heat produced by the laser. Finally, the fat is suctioned out using small, traditional liposuction cannulas.
After surgery, a compression bandage is applied and must be worn for four to six weeks. It should be taken off only to shower. Recovery is fast, with most patients returning to work in a few days, and returning to normal activity within a week. There is always some bruising, which will heal. Results will vary from patient to patient, and so there are no guarantees when it comes to a specific desired outcome.
