Breast Reduction
For a Healthier, More-Confident You
Many women struggle with the weight caused by extremely large breasts. The most common age for breast reduction surgery is between 20 and 40 years old, but it can be performed at any age. Most of the breast development occurs around puberty, and it is not uncommon to have this procedure done as a teenager. Breast reduction is performed for medical reasons and is usually covered by health insurance.
Some of the symptoms that are caused by the weight of very large breasts include:
Pain
The weight of very heavy breast tissue can cause pain neck, shoulder and back pain.
Shoulder Grooves
Heavy breasts require full support and wider strapped bras. The wide straps can cause noticeable grooves to develop on the shoulders.
Numbness
Some women with very large breasts report that they experience numbness in their breast area from excess weight. Others report numbness in their arms, hands, and fingers that is caused by poor weight distribution and slouched posture which compresses nerve pathways.
Shortness of Breath
Extra-large breasts can create shortness of breath due to excess weight
Exercise Difficulty
Women with very large breasts express a problem with different types of exercise, performing daily chores or lifting children. A lack of physical activity can create a range of health consequences.
Rashes
Extra-large breasts may trap heat and moisture, which causes chronic rashes and skin infections.
Headaches or Migraines
Large breasts may cause poor posture such as a hunched neck and shoulders. This poor posture may trigger headaches or migraines. Headaches and migraines have other causes, but overly large breasts may be connected to this problem. Many women report experiencing a large reduction in headaches or migraines after having the surgery completed.
Many of these symptoms can be managed before surgery using massage, physical therapy and medication to reduce discomfort. Breast reduction surgery can eliminate chronic issues, such as pain, rashes, reduced ability to exercise and shortness of breath.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is done with general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The surgery takes between two to three hours. The incisions are typically created around the areola and down to and below the breast crease. When the excess breast tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the areola is repositioned.
The breasts are wrapped for 24 hours after the surgery, which reduces swelling and discomfort. A sports bra is constantly worn for the next month and all excess activity must be limited. Sutures are not usually needed. A surgical breast lift may also be completed to lift the breast tissue and reduce sagging. Dr. Reno can discuss this option with you during your consultation.
Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia refers to enlarged breasts in men. This condition can make men very self-conscious and this can usually be addressed using liposuction. Dr. Reno performs male breast reduction surgery for men with larger breasts that cannot be treated with liposuction alone. Skin, fat and tissue are removed from the lower breast, and the nipple is then repositioned as well.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery
Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery are men with gynecomastia or women with oversized breasts that are causing medical issues, physical or social discomfort, low self-esteem or emotional dissatisfaction. Women cannot be pregnant or breast-feeding while having this procedure. It is important for patients to be realistic about expectations. Dr. Reno meets with each patient during a private consultation for an examination and to review their health history.
Recovery and Aftercare
After the breast reduction surgery, soreness, swelling and bruising can be expected for several days. The bandage is removed after 24 hours and replaced with a surgical bra. Physical activity must be kept to a minimum for one to two weeks and a strenuous physical exercise must be kept at a minimum until released by Dr. Reno. It is important to complete all follow-up visits with Dr. Reno to ensure proper healing is completed.
Results: Breast Reduction Surgery before/after
Breast reduction surgery will create permanent scars, but Dr. Reno completes the surgery in a way that minimizes the scars by circling the nipple and hiding under the breast line. The scars may appear lumpy and red immediately after surgery but will fade over time. Review breast reduction surgery before/after results during your consultation with Dr. Reno.
