Breast Augmentation – Hattiesburg
What you need to know
What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation is a very common procedure, with its purpose being to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast, giving a more youthful appearance. Breast implants come in numerous sizes and shapes, and several options for incision placement and implant location are available. The final choice for Breast Implants depends on your particular body shape and your overall aesthetic goals and desires. A breast lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with an augmentation. It is important to discuss your expectations openly. The doctors will explain the pros and cons of these options to you, allowing you to be comfortable in your decision.
With a recent FDA approval, both saline and silicone gel implants are now available for cosmetic breast augmentation.
Surgery/Recovery:
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure usually takes about an hour. You will be placed in a surgical bra and will be able to shower the next day. You should avoid strenuous activity, lifting, pushing, or pulling for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients will be able to return to work in a few days with light duty only. If you get in the tanning bed you should keep your incisions covered for the first 4 to 6 months.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Who are candidates for Breast Augmentations?
Any healthy individual over the age of 18 that wishes to have fuller more shapely breasts is a good candidate for a breast augmentation. Because we have multiple implant choices with regard to size and shape, we can customize an individual approach to help you achieve your desired result.
What is the recovery from a Breast Augmentation?
Following a breast augmentation, you can expect to feel tightness and pressure on your chest. Muscle relaxers and pain medication are prescribed to minimize discomfort. The implants typically appear too high and a little too big right after surgery. Over time, which can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months, the muscles and skin will relax and the implants will settle into position.
What are the risks of Breast Augmentation?
As with any operation, there are risks such as bleeding or infection. More specific to implants are the risks of an implant leak, capsular contracture, or palpable or visible rippling. Changes in breast sensation can happen but are very uncommon.
Breast implant associated lymphoma is a very rare and highly treatable type of lymphoma. It is known to be more associated with textured implants. Here at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hattiesburg we use smooth implants. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons now recognizes approximately 303 both suspected and confirmed cases in the United States and a total of 871 worldwide as of December 6, 2019. Will someone know that I had a Breast Augmentation?
The likelihood of someone knowing you had a breast augmentation will depend mainly on what you wear and how large an implant you choose. A breast augmentation will accentuate your natural breast shape. If you have more skin and breast tissue to begin with, you will typically have a more natural shape after surgery when compared to someone with very little skin and breast tissue. Those with little skin or breast tissue will have much more of a high, rounded, implanted look.
How does a Breast Augmentation feel?
Following a breast augmentation, your breasts will typically feel a little bit firmer than before surgery. Silicone gel implants have a softer more natural feel when compared to saline-filled implants.
